Janelle in Chicago and Lashonda in Houston are the two African-American women on Amature, and each has built a small business she loves - a plant shop and a wine bar in an old cellar. Janelle and the palms
Janelle, 35, has rich brown skin and a voluminous shoulder-length crown of natural curls. She left a law office to open a plant shop in Chicago and now lives in a converted warehouse loft with whitewashed brick, a rattan floor lamp, a low mustard velvet sofa and more potted palms than chairs. She wedges her phone between the leaves and sets the timer; once a month she books herself a boutique hotel room. The camera comes along.
Lashonda and the cellar
Lashonda, 39, has deep brown skin and very long sleek black hair with a middle part. She did hair for years, fell for wine, and now owns a wine bar in an old vaulted cellar in Houston: stone arches, wooden racks, candles in iron holders and a royal blue velvet sofa in the corner. After the last guests climb the stairs, she sets her phone on a wine crate. She shoots by candlelight. On her one night off a month she takes a grand old hotel room.
How they write
Janelle writes warm, unhurried messages with a laugh in them, knows every plant by name and will tell you which one is watching. Lashonda writes slow, rich messages with Southern warmth and a teasing edge, takes her time and expects you to take yours. Both reply in your language. Both pick up where you left off.
